Andy Murray’s mum makes sex ban claim with tennis players living ‘lonely existence’
Judy Murray insists it is a myth that sexual intercourse can affect an athlete’s performance. Murray, the mother of two-time Wimbledon champion Andy, has rubbished ‘sex bans’ adopted by several coaches in various sports.
Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and former Germany head coach Joachim Low have both been reported to have banned sex at certain times. It has been claimed that Guardiola instructs his players to never have sex late at night as it can impact sleep.
However, Murray has quashed those theories, suggesting that it is ‘part and parcel of life. The 63-year-old, who is a successful tennis coach, believes sex is required as the tennis circuit can often be a lonely place for players.
Asked if ‘sex bans’ work, Murray told GB News: “No, absolutely not. I mean, it’s part and parcel of life, isn’t it? And I think one of the things certainly on the tennis tour is it’s a very lonely existence.
“You’re travelling the world for probably 10 and a half, 11 months of the year, the circuit just goes on and on and on.
“So it’s really important to have as normal a social life as you can possibly have. And that’s why many, many players travel with family and partners.”
Bans on sexual intercourse have been enforced throughout sport. Guardiola and Low are two of the more high-profile coaches to reportedly adopt such a measure.
Former City star Samir Nasri revealed Guardiola’s bizarre rule several years ago, although it is unclear if it is still adopted. Nasri told L’Equipe du Soir in 2016: “For him, his players’ sexual activity must take place before midnight in order to get a good night’s sleep.
