F1 team owner put on wedding for daughter that sparked PGA Tour and Liv Golf deal

Lawrence Stroll’s daughter’s wedding was reportedly key in the timeline that saw plans announced earlier this week for the PGA Tour to merge with Liv Golf. Seven weeks of negotiations saw the ground-breaking deal announced which has shaken the sport and both parties have the Aston Martin chief to thank for their meet up in Italy.

The deal has caused an uproar within both camps, with most of those affected by the news caught unaware by the joint release on Tuesday after an agreement was signed. However, negotiations have been ongoing since April 18, according to New York Times.

Jimmy Dunne of the PGA Tour is said to have reached out to Yasir al-Rumayyan via WhatsApp that day, taking an informal tone when asking to arrange a call and ‘hopefully’ a meeting further down the line.

Both agreed not to sign nondisclosure agreements whilst talks were ongoing, with a second meeting between officials coming in Venice, Italy between PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and al-Rumayyan. The latter was in the area to attend Stroll’s daughter’s wedding and agreed to meet with Monahan at a nearby golf course.

The meeting proved vital in an overall agreement being reached, with both parties coming away from their conversations encouraged by the discussions and willing to meet further down the line. Additional meetings are then said to have taken place over the phone and also in San Francisco and New York before a full agreement was reached.
