Emma Raducanu backed to continue brutal regime akin to being a football club owner
Former world No.4 Thomas Enqvist believes that Emma Raducanu will continue her high turnover of coaches as it is “part and parcel of the business.” Enqvist likened Raducanu’s brutal regime to that of a football club owner sacking and hiring managers.
Raducanu recently split with her fifth coach in less than two years, Sebastian Sachs, due to ‘unfeasible circumstances’ and is now on the lookout for another. The 20-year-old confirmed the news via Twitter two weeks ago, writing: “I have really enjoyed Seb’s coaching and working with him, it’s unfortunate that circumstances made it unfeasible for both of us to continue right now and we have decided to part ways. I wish Seb all the best moving forwards.”
Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz and Dmitry Tursunov have also spent brief stints with the Brit in recent years but weren’t able to keep their jobs. Considering her history of switching between mentors Enqvist was asked whether anyone would be willing to take on the task of coaching Raducanu.
In response, he told Sky Sports: “That’s the risk for any coach. It’s the way it works. If you look at the football coaches, they don’t get too many chances and I’ve been a player myself so you also need the chance to try.
“The best thing to do is to find someone you really like and you can get the stability, which is important, but I also do believe what you find, what you look for, you also have to try. It’s the business that we’re in.
“If you get asked from a talented player to work with you, it’s important to have that period of trying to get to know each other and also try and find a way to pull in the right direction.”
Raducanu recently underwent surgery on both wrists which forced her out of this year’s French Open and Wimbledon as well. She remains optimistic that she will be back playing before the end of 2023.
