Andy Murray sparked a frenzy among his fans with a self-deprecating joke on social media after teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva called him ‘beautiful’. The pair’s fortunes have contrasted at the Madrid Open, with Murray crashing out at the first hurdle and Andreeva taking several big scalps en route to the Round of 16.
Andreeva, who started the tournament at 15 years old, received a wildcard into the main draw of the Madrid Open and began in spectacular fashion, beating former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.
Things only progressed from there as the Russian, who only turned 16 on Saturday, beat two top-20-ranked opponents in Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette to set up a mouthwatering showdown with Aryna Sabalenka in the next round.
As one of the hot topics of the tournament, Andreeva was asked about her experience so far in Spain, which sparked a compliment towards three-time Grand Slam champion Murray.
