Novak Djokovic has ruthlessly ended Stan Wawrinka’s comeback run at the Italian Open, with a straight-sets demolition of his Swiss rival.
The World No.1 brutally dispatched Wawrinka 6-2, 6-2 to book a place in the quarter-finals and keep alive his hopes of retaining the top status in men’s tennis.
The 20-time grand slam champion needs to reach the last four in Rome to stop Russia’s Daniil Medvedev from once again leapfrogging him into top spot.
Wawrinka has famously beaten Djokovic six times throughout their careers, with his most famous win coming against the Serb in the 2015 French Open final.
However, the injury-ravaged Swiss star – who won his first match in 15 months earlier this week – was no match for Djokovic in Rome.
